Part of the beauty of dance is in its constant willingness to accept innovation. Two of the craft's most prominent modern innovators are the MacArthur Grant awardee Michelle Dorrance and the Bessie Award-winner Ephrat "Bounce" Asherie. Each of these choreographers have staked out particular specialties: tap for Dorrance and breakdancing for Asherie. Their new collaborative work, The Center Will Not Hold, features original music composed by Donovan Dorrance with live percussion by the world-class drummer John Angeles. Together, they provide the tempo for a cast of 11 singular performers deeply rooted in an array of street, club and vernacular dances, including house, breaking, hip-hop, tap, Chicago footwork, Detroit jit, litefeet and Memphis jookin. Following workshops and an abbreviated premiere at New York City Center’s 2023 Fall for Dance Festival, The Center Will Not Hold is a must-see for anyone interested in the future of modern dance.

As a pioneer of new tap dance, Michelle Dorrance has elevated the clacking of metal taps to an entirely new level. She has always sought to engage with other styles and with contemporary dance. Now, in collaboration with New York breakdancer Ephrat Asherie, Dorrance enters into a dialogue with street dance, which, like tap dance, originally emerged as a subversive form on the streets, rooted in protest and growing through improvisation. From the reflections of these two strong women, a connection develops, and other dancers contribute their own styles, such as body percussion, house, or Chicago footwork. Set to music by Donovan Dorrance, the piece is not about virtuosity or competition. It has a more serious theme, namely the current state of the world, where people wear masks to protect themselves. Dialogue gives rise to the question of whether the center, the middle of humanity, can hold – or whether everything will break apart and our world will plunge into chaos.

Explosive tap dance meets hot jazz rhythms in acclaimed company Dorrance Dance’s intoxicating production of the holiday classic. Danced to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s marvelously inventive 1960 reinterpretation of the classic Tchaikovsky score, The Nutcracker Suite boogies, slides, struts, and dives through the magical story of a young girl and her fantastical Christmas adventure. Along with collaborators Hannah Heller and Josette Wiggan, Artistic Director Michelle Dorrance transforms the Sugar Plum Fairy into a slinky Sugar Rum Cherry, the “March of the Toy Soldiers” becomes a swinging brass “Peanut Brittle Brigade” romp, and the original ballet’s pageant of national dances gets a fresh new 21st-century twist.

From the fleet-footed imaginations of tap dance stars Michelle Dorrance and Josette Wiggan, and their collaborator and downtown theater darling Hannah Heller, comes this jazzy new vision of the holiday tradition. Part seasonal concert, part tap ballet, The Nutcracker Suite is a toe-tapping, hand-clapping revelation set to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s extraordinary arrangement of the Tchaikovsky classic.

The festivities begin with a host of holiday favorites, from “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to “Jingle Bells,” interpreted by “powerhouse” (The Washington Post) vocalist Aaron Marcellus and Dorrance's incomparable dancers, accompanied by live music. Then it’s through the glittering curtain to an uptown Christmas party, where this Nutcracker story begins.

Whether it’s a tap battle with the Rat King or a big band Waltz of the Flowers—and don’t forget the Soft-Shoe of the Snowflakes—Dorrance and her collaborators offer a joyful riff on beloved material that’s the perfect start to your family’s holiday season.
